Learning from my experience, SXSW 2011.

SXSW 2011 has recently come to an end and for the first time I had the chance to experience the festival in Austin, TX. First off I must give a bit of advice to anyone thinking of attending in the future. Do not buy any tickets if it is your first time going. It is important to understand that there are over 500 free shows at a festival that prides itself on bringing in Indie and Unsigned artists. Artists such as: Bright Eyes, Man Man, and the Strokes played free shows this year. Believe me when I say that you will have a good time even without a SXSW Official necklace that only makes you look slightly cooler than the fashionable guitar player playing in the wrong key.

Fortunately for myself, I was able to experience the festival in more than one way. Aside from watching some of the most interesting bands in the world, I was also lucky enough to be performing multiple shows with my band. That being said, the best part of SXSW is the learning experience for new bands. The first thing I noticed was the Promotional and Marketing campaigns run by music companies, clothing companies, and most of all up and coming bands like my own. Its a mad house of advertisement but I learned very quickly that it is genius. As a business you are able to put yourself right in the middle of your target market in a matter of seconds. The crowd keeps moving and you rarely see the same person twice letting thousands of eyes see your brand at a very large rate. If only 10% of the people you advertise to adhere to your brand, you have succeeded astronomically compared to any other form personal marketing.

Overall SXSW is the best experience I have had as a band member and fan of new music combined. Certainly you can go to better shows if your only purpose is to watch your favorite band, but the advertising and marketing opportunities at SXSW out weigh any other festival. It is a combination of bands all doing the same thing, Trying to expand there brand (band name and music) and for fans, all are looking for that new great band. The band that no one back home knows about. Make the trip to Austin if you ever get the chance. Take a car, van, or truck, full of friends, and remember to wear your seat belts. Everyone! Its the Law....Apparently.

My blog's theme, unique to my FSO reply

My blog, Look Mom, No hands, is an idea I have had for quite sometime but as always I wait until I am obligated and therefore it starts today. The point of the blog is to offer insight on the reality of being involved with and managing indie/unsigned bands. Since 2007 I have been a rhythm guitar player of the band Life Size Ghost, (unsigned regional touring band) and the guy who keeps the band busy, that entails making marketing and managerial decisions. I have learned a lot over the last few years, some learning experiences great and others not so much.  My blogs will include three main categories: Real life band horror stories, Humorous band success stories, and ideas and concepts that I believe will help bands not to make the same mistakes that nearly every band makes. Including how to not break the bank. If this interests you, please make it a point to visit again.

The idea behind the title "Look Mom, No hands is simple. How many times did you take your hand off the bars and fall before gloating to the parent? Mistakes happen and we learn from them, not by quitting but by improving what you did wrong. Hopefully this blog can provide some useful information and practices to individuals, musicians, and those new to marketing and managerial life, that are in search of a heads up.
